.run File Extension

Developer: N/A
File type: Linux Executable File
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .run. Files with the file extension .run can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .run files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .run file?

A file in the RUN format is an executable Linux-based application that contains code associated with a specific program developed for the Linux platform. This code usually initializes the application itself, though in some cases, files in the .run extension refers to program installers for applications developed for the Linux OS. Device driver software for Linux is often bundled and distributed with .run files included in the package. These .run files initialize the installation of these device driver software applications, so Linux users can quickly and easily install or update their device driver software. A .run file that fails to initialize is most likely lacking the appropriate executable permissions from the Linux OS. This can be corrected by adding the required permissions via this chmod command: chmod +x filenamehere.run. Users can afterwards initialize the .run file with this command: ./filenamehere.run.

how to open a .run file?

Launch a .run file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .run file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .run files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .run file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .run file will open the correct application. Linux Mint

Linux Mint

Linux Mint is an application that was designed to serve as a GNU or Linux system, and the common set of features that are integrated into many GNU and Linux system versions are also implemented into this OS distribution. Certain functionalities have been added to Linux Mint in order to provide users with more customization options and easier to navigate or simpler to operate panels and feature OS sections. Linux Mint has also been implemented with wider compatibility support for new Linux applications. Some users install Linux Mint or another GNU/Linux distribution version in their computers as an alternative system, since Microsoft Windows is already installed and selected as their primary system in the same machine, because this allows them to access different applications that only work with either Microsoft Windows platforms, or GNU/Linux distributions.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .run files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .run. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
