what is a .prp file?

Files in the PRP format are data files created by Rational Rhapsody, a modeling environment designed for systems engineers and software developers. Rational Rhapsody makes use of graphical models to create real-time or embedded systems and software. It is a visual development environment which helps diverse teams and to collaborate to understand and elaborate requirements. PRP files are properties files which contain a list of properties that will be referred upon the creation of a data model through Rational Rhapsody. Such files are also similar to PTY files but are more interactive as it supports user-control. It can also be differentiated from PTY files because it is created for multi-user environments. Viewing and editing such files is only limited to its authoring software, which is the Rational Rhapsody. Manual opening and converting of PRP files are also discouraged as it may damage of corrupt your file.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .prp files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .prp. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
