This means that more advanced compression algorithms like Zip (.ZIP) and Stuffit (.SIT) compression have already replaced this compression method. Aside from being obsolete and never been used for several years already, PIT files are also MAC files only which means they can only be opened on a MAC OS. However, since these files have been replaced by more modern compression already, although they are no longer common, in case users get hold of PIT files, they can be opened on Windows operating systems already with the use of more modern compression such as the Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe 2010.

PackIt is a file compressor developed by Harry Chesley and it is software that’s meant to be used to archive and compress files in MAC operating systems. This file compressor is mainly associated with PIT files wherein PIT files refer to PackIt Compressed Archives. In other words, these files are the archives created by PackIt and they can only be opened and viewed on a MAC operating system. PackIt was also known as the first program widely used by MAC operating systems but quickly disappeared when StuffIt was introduced in 1987. However, there are latest versions of PackIt that were released such as PackIt 2 that comes with an added Huffman encoding feature as well as the PackIt 3 which is still a popular file compressor until today. PackIt is also known to be a reliable file compression utility for MAC OS when it comes to reducing file sizes for backup and for saving space on users’ hard drives.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .pit files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .pit. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
