KISMAC files contain useful information from computer networks that are scanned such as clients and services. These files are helpful when it comes to analyzing wireless networks offline as well as they are also saved in a compressed format. Since KISMAC files deal with wireless networks, they are helpful when it comes to gaining access to wireless networks through the cracking of network passwords. KISMAC files contribute to the good function of the KISMAC application; a program that allows users to sniff and scan wireless computer networks wherein it is considered a more advanced application as it uses passive scanning and monitor mode. This software is exclusive MAC OS software so it can only run on a MAC operating system. KISMAC files are categorized as data files and can thereby be accessed on a MAC operating system only.

KisMAC

KisMAC

KisMAC is an Open Source network monitoring tool that passively sniffs out available wireless networks in 802.11 a/b/g/n channels. Aside from detecting named networks and collecting data packets in the air, the software also works as a discovery tool for hidden WiFi hotspots. Other features of KisMAC include mapping of MAC and IP addresses of users connected to the network, GPS tracking, and various network attacks on WPA and WEP encryption using brute force, weak scheduling, and Newsham 21-bit de-authentication. Unlike other stumblers designed for Mac OS, the KisMAC isn't easily detected by administrators as it listens passively to one channel after another. Technically, it supports Intersil Prism 2, 2.5 and 3 devices, Ralink rt2570 and rt73 USb devices, and Realtek RTL8187L chipsets. Because the operating system's standard AirPort driver doesn't support passive monitoring, the software must use a ViHa AirPort driver that's available under a GPL license.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .kismac files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .kismac. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
