A file with the AVD extension is used by the ClamWin software for updating the virus definitions in its current database with the new definitions provided by the developer of this application for its users. The ClamWin program is an anti-virus software developed by Sourcefire to offer users with system protection functionalities. Virus definition databases of most system security applications are updated by data files called virus definitions files. The ClamAV application also uses files in the CVD format, and this is an anti-virus program also offered as an open source application. The content of these CVD files is also called a digitally signed tarball which may contain one or more databases for the virus definitions provided by the developer. There are versions of the ClamAV software developed for Microsoft Windows systems and Linux platforms.

ClamWin

ClamWin

ClamWin is a free antivirus software based on the ClamAV engine with a GNU General Public License given by the Free Software Foundation. It is built to run on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. It features a scanning scheduler, and it automatically downloads updated virus database regularly. It has a stand alone scanner and a right click menu that is integrated to the Microsoft Windows Explorer. It works as an add-on in Microsoft Outlook which monitors e-mail attachments and removes virus infected attachments immediately. Its has detects viruses and spyware, but does not include an on-access and real-time scanner. Users will have to manually scan a file to detect virus or spyware. ClamWin can not automatically scan files as they are read and written. Developers plan to include this feature into the next major version update and is said to be in development since December of 2005. An affiliated project, the Clam Sentinel, serves as an add-on that can proved real-time scanning capabilities to ClamWin.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .cvd files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .cvd. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
