what is a .vsv file?

The .vsv file extension is mainly associated with Windows Virtual PC and server applications. The files that are created using these applications are all saved into the .vsv format. These files are often deemed as Virtual Machine Saved State File because the state of the virtual machine’s memory is saved using this file extension, thereby the saved state of the virtual machine is called a .vsv file. With these files, saving VM snapshots as well as to revert them back to their exact saved state is possible for users to perform. The users, however, cannot directly open the .vsv files because .vmc files are used to reference them. The file size of .vsv files are known to be similar to the RAM amount allocated for the VM because these files save the latest VM RAM state. In other words, the size of the .vsv files depends upon the RAM size that’s allocated for the VM.

Microsoft Windows Virtual PC

Microsoft Windows Virtual PC

Windows Virtual PC and server applications are integrated primarily with the .vsv file extension, and the files that are made with these applications are saved and bear the .vsv format. These files are believed to be the Virtual Machine Saved State File due to the state of its virtual machine memory that uses the said file extension and is called the VSV file. Virtual Machine snapshots are able to be saved and be reverted it to its original format with the use of these files. VSV files cannot be accessed directly since it is referenced by the VMC files. Windows Virtual PC virtualizes a basic PC and its related hardware. Supported Windows operating systems can work inside a Virtual PC, however, the other operating systems such as Linux may work, but are not officially supported, and Microsoft does not give the necessary Virtual Machine Additions, which include essential drivers for Linux.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .vsv files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .vsv. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
