what is a .srr file?

The archive metadata files created using Rescene uses the file extension SRR, which is why these archive metadata files are called ReScene Metadata Files. All metadata files in the RAR archive are backed up using SRR files and just as Rescene is a program used in repackaging RAR files, SRR files contain backups of all RAR file parts although it does not contain the actual data archived. SRR files also refer to the storage of other release files like SFV and NFO as well as can be a combination of original non-metadata archive files so that the original distribution archive can be recreated. The ReScene program deals with Warez scenes since when REScene creates SRR files containing backup copies, these files are most of the time located in Warez RAR archives. SRR files are also extensible formats which mean they may be used for other purposes in the future. Windows can open SRR files with the REscene application installed.

ReScene

ReScene

ReScene is software developed to backup and restore metadata from RAR files found in torrent websites. It is a command-line utility that was created to support the x264 community, and requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or greater to run. RAR files contain the file information and the metadata that describes the file – i.e. file names, attributes, and dates – that support some of the compressed file’s features. The metadata may be important when decompressing the file into the original for authenticity verification, comments, and recovery records. ReScene creates backup for RAR files with the complete metadata that will allow users to re-create the original RAR file. It features an automatic CRC (checking during reconstruction) that performs data checking against the CRC value from the RAR header when they are built. Automatic CRC validates the data inside the RAR and warns users if the file being reconstructed is corrupt. ReScene can be used on files created with Store mode.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .srr files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .srr. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
