what is a .mxi file?

The MXI file extension is known as Maxwell Image File which was developed by Next Limit. The Maxwell Image includes a photorealistic graphics rendering application. It also contains high dynamic range (HDR) image data extra render channels such as depth buffer, shadow channel and lighting adjustments. It is derived from an .mxs 3D scene file or from another imported image format and is used as the native output format for rendered images. MXI files save lighting information or the image based lighting settings, which includes the calculations for the light conditions in the scene that allows users to refix or recompute light settings in future renderings. It allows users to temporarily stop rendering and resume it at a later time, which is useful for generating partial previews. MXI format is always set as default output settings, but the checkbox can be disabled in case user wants to save it to another format. Files in MXI format can be opened with Next Limit Maxwell Render in Mac OS, Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mxi files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mxi. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
