what is a .lvm file?

LVM files are LabVIEW Measurement Files developed by National Instruments. They are mostly used by LABview, an application used for the development of measurements, tests, and control with the use of various hardware instruments. These LVM measurement files are usually files containing a one-dimensional data appropriately used for data sets of small or medium sizes. These are also files saved in an ASCII text format where they are arranged using rows and columns. This format contains a line that serves as storage of a tab or comma-delimited record and an identifier tag with data that corresponds to these tags. LVM files can also be saved as TDM binary files and can be edited with the use of any text editor. LVM files can store output data with the use of either the LabVIEW "Write To Measurement File" function or store input data using the "Read From Measurement File" function. LABVIEW can be run using multiple platforms.

National Instruments LabVIEW

National Instruments LabVIEW

LabVIEW (short for Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Engineering Workbench) is a system design platform and improvement environment for a visual programming language from National Instruments. It is frequently used for instrument control, data acquisition, and industrial automation on a range of platforms including Microsoft Windows, a variety of versions of UNIX, Linux, and Mac OS X. The latest version of LabVIEW is “LabVIEW 2012”, released in August 2012; this platform is originally released for the Apple Macintosh on 1986. The TDM file type is mainly employed with 'DIAdem', a program by National Instruments Corporation intended for measurements and engineering in areas such as evaluating, processing, and generating reports for measurement data. When TDM files are loaded into appropriate software, the original data together with any added descriptive information is immediately available to the user. This enables report generation, data analysis, and easier interpretation of results. This file extension is utilized by LabView, for the interaction of hardware devices with data being stored in ASCII format.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .lvm files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .lvm. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
