Microsoft HighMAT Extension

Microsoft HighMAT Extension

Microsoft HighMAT Extension stands for "High Performance Media Access Technology", which makes it easier and convenient to be used for storing data in CDs. Before, it was tiresome and tedious for most users to preserve pertinent and necessary information in a CD, because it could not be stored in a single file. With this innovation in CD formatting technology, users can access data in a single file, such that the CD player or reader can read it right away. This format attempts to solve the problem that is usually encountered when storing data in CDs. Digital photos, music and videos can be stored much faster in CDs with this technology, since it can be stored right away. If a user's CD reader also contains a Microsoft HighMAT Extension logo, then the CD can easily be viewed and shared. This format was developed by Microsoft.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .hmt files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .hmt. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
