what is a .hbe file?

Classified as compressed files, these HyperBac compressed and encrypted archives are integrated with compression specifications proprietary to the HyperBac file decompression and compression software, developed by Xceleon Technologies. The HyperBac program was mainly created to provide support for compressing database files into smaller sizes. A database file or a group of database files can be stored in one HyperBac compressed and encrypted archive, saved in the HBE format and affixed with the .hbe extension for optimal portability. Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, SharePoint, IBM DB/2, Sybase, SAP BRBackup database management systems among other database formats are supported by these HBE files and the HyperBac software. AES encryption standards are also implemented into these HBE files by the HyperBac program, promoting better data security for the database content stored in these HBE files. Associated files containing unique encryption keys are used by the HyperBac application for verifying access to the data stored in an HBE file.

Red Gate SQL HyperBac

Red Gate SQL HyperBac

Red Gate SQL HyperBac. Developed by Red Gate Software Ltd., is a compression and encryption tool for SQL Server backups. It can compress files up to 95% and provides users with an option to backup to other file formats like .zip. This program runs as a Windows Service and intercepts read and write requests whenever a user creates a backup or runs a restore. Because the application executes file compression and encryption externally, there is no need to modify or configure the SQL Sever. SQL Hyperbac works directly with standard T-SQL BACKUP and RESTORE, so no special syntax is needed and likewise, there is no need to alter back-up routines. It uses its own dictionary-based lossless compression algorithm and utilizes the compression storage formats SHRINK, SHRINKFAST (proprietary format), and DEFFLATE. HyperBac uses a 256-bit AES encryption to secure files and to prevent unauthorized access to confidential data.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .hbe files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .hbe. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
