DM files are generally audio files encoded with DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy-protection and they were invented by the Open Mobile Alliance. These are customized ring tones and media clips downloaded only for selected authorized cellular phones. Under the OMA DRM v1.0, DM files contain the content and the rights of the message to be delivered. For Sony Ericsson users, these files are created in the DRM Packager. However if it’s for Nokia users, these files are available from online Nokia Ovi Store and uses SIS.DM or SISX.DM file extension. Files in DM format can be opened with Sony Ericsson DRM Packager and SISContents in Microsoft Windows based systems. These files can be converted to MP3 or MIDI format and one way to unlock DM ringtones is by recording and saving the ringtone to a different format.

Digital Rights Management is a technology that is used in securing the distribution, promotion and sales of a digital media. It protects digital content through limited usage, like for instance in 3G, where operators and content providers need a method that will allow then to sell content without freely distributing it between devices. DRM is defined by the standards of Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). OMA DRM enables controlled consumption of digital media objects by letting content providers express usage rights like the ability to preview DRM content, to prevention of illegally forwarding downloaded DRM content from to other users, and in enabling super distribution of DRM content. Usage rights are controlled with DRM, these are defined for all types of content. Different rights from different users may be applied on the same content. DRM controls usage rights like the number of times it can be used, the period it can be used and the length of time it can be used. This kind of control enables content providers to create more subscriptions and pay-per-use models and will also stimulate mobile content based services.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .dm files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .dm. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
