Switching from Mac to PC – Accessing a PC remotely

Maybe you need a little help in your transition from a Mac to a PC, and maybe you have a friend who is good with PCs who could help you solve a problem with your new computer environment. How good would it be if your friend could just access your PC from his/her home and fix your problem remotely? Or maybe you have a PC in your office, and you want to use it to access your home PC.

Windows has a great remote desktop facility to make these things possible. Here’s a quick walkthrough of Windows Remote Desktop Connection.

Prerequisites

To be able to access one PC from another, remotely, the PC you want to access must be turned on. You must be able to access the PC from a network or internet connection. The PC must have Remote Desktop enabled, and you must be set up with permission to access the PC.

Setting up Remote Access

On the computer you want to connect to, do the following.

  1. Click Start (Windows Key + X in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1)
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click System
  4. Click Remote Settings. This is on the left side of the System window.
  5. Select Allow Remote Connections to This Computer.
  6. Click Select Users.
  7. Providing that you are an administrator on this PC, you should see your user name has already been added.
  8. Click OK.
